Although gloves were used in practice, in a fight players wrapped their hands in hardened leather to prevent injury. Homer's lliad holds the first detailed account of a box competition.

Records of classical boxing activity fell down after the fall of Roman Empire. There was also a sport called Fistfight. The first bare knuckle fight in England appeared in 1681. English bare-knuckle champion was James Figg in 1719. 1719 was the time when the word boxing first was common. There were no weight checks and no referee to see the round.
