Hi, my name is Tim, and I will tell you about the Great Pyramid of Giza. The Great Pyramid is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was a tomb for the Fourth Dynasty pharaoh Khufu of Egypt. If you where the pharaoh of Egypt, you would have all your treasures buried with you. That made all of the pyramids in Egypt very valuable. The Great Pyramid was around 146.6 meters tall or 40 stories tall. I found that The Great Pyramid was the tallest building for over 3,800 years long! It is an amazing building, for the ancient people's time, and today's time.

What the Great Pyramid Was Made Of

Next, I will tell about how the Great Pyramid was constructed. The pyramid was a gigantic building, so what was it made of and who built it? The Great Pyramid was made of limestone. The Egyptians had a limestone quarry down the Nile River, so the workers mined for the limestone then transported it on boats to where the construction was going on. A quarry is a place where the workers mine for stone and other minerals. The workers at the construction built the stones from layer to layer. It was a very long process. On the Pyramid of Giza, there are the white 'casing stones.' These are highly polished limestone pieces. In Egypt, there was an earthquake that loosened the stones. These stones where eventually carted of for the construction of more buildings in Cairo. The Pyramid of Giza has about 2.3 million limestone blocks. That makes the Pyramid of Giza weigh 5.9 million tones!!! The Great Pyramid is a fascinating building.

How the Great Pyramid Was Made

People have many ideas on how the Pyramid was made. Nobody really knows. One idea is that there where dirt ramps along the sides of the pyramid. Then the workers would roll the limestone pieces up the ramps. Other people say that the stones where lifted or even dragged onto the construction site. People don't even agree on if the people who built the Pyramid where skilled workers whom had a salary, or slaves whom did not have a salary. Nobody knows even how the Pyramid was planned. There are all the answers out there some where. That is why the pyramid is a wonder.

After the Great of Pyramids

After Khufu died, his son Khafre became the new pharaoh of Egypt. Khafre built his own pyramid southwest of Khufu's pyramid. Khafre built the Great Sphinx in front of his own pyramid. The Great Sphinx is a huge stone lion with a human head. Khafre's pyramid is not as big as Khufu's tomb. Menkaura was Khafre's son. He built his own pyramid near his father's tomb. All three pyramids still stand and so do all of their wives' pyramids. Many tourists come to see the great pyramid. Visitors used to be allowed to climb up the pyramids and look out at the view, but you can no longer climb them. Archeologists know every place in the pyramids except one thing. Archeologists have never found the body of the pharaoh Khufu. That adds to the many mysteries of the Great Pyramids.
