Hi, I'm Tim, and I am going to tell you about the Colossus of Rhodes. The Colossus of Rhodes was a wonder of the ancient world. The Colossus of Rhodes was a huge statue at the harbor of Rhodes. It stood right over the harbor entrance. It was a statue of the god Helios. The Colossus of Rhodes was 107 feet high, so it was one of the tallest buildings in the ancient world. The Colossus of Rhodes is an amazing building.


How the Colossus of Rhodes was made


There are many theories how the Colossus of Rhodes was built. Here is one theory. For the skin, there were iron bars which brass plates were fixed onto. The interior of the Colossus of Rhodes was filled with stone. The Colossus of Rhodes stood on a 50 foot pedestal which was made of white marble. Most of the iron and bronze was from sorts of weapons, from the battlefield. For a scaffold, the workers used abandoned siege tower. A scaffold is an object like a ladder, only it goes across the entire building. Workers would pile dirt on the sides of the Colossus of Rhodes, but the dirt was eventually was removed. After twelve long years the Colossus of Rhodes was completed.


The Destruction of the Colossus of Rhodes


The Colossus of Rhodes is no longer here. Only fifty- six years Rhodes was hit by an earthquake. Many buildings were damaged, but so was the Colossus of Rhodes. It snapped at the knees, and fell down on the land. The Colossus of Rhodes was in ruins. The leader offered to rebuild the Colossus of Rhodes, but the people were afraid they had angered the god Helios. The Colossus of Rhodes is destroyed.
