Hi, I'm Tim, and I am
going to tell you about the Colossus of Rhodes. The Colossus of Rhodes
was a wonder of the ancient world. The Colossus of Rhodes was a huge statue
at the harbor of Rhodes. It stood right over the harbor entrance. It was
a statue of the god Helios. The Colossus of Rhodes was 107 feet high,
so it was one of the tallest buildings in the ancient world. The Colossus
of Rhodes is an amazing building.
How the Colossus of Rhodes was made
There are many theories how the Colossus of Rhodes was built. Here is
one theory. For the skin, there were iron bars which brass plates were
fixed onto. The interior of the Colossus of Rhodes was filled with stone.
The Colossus of Rhodes stood on a 50 foot pedestal which was made of white
marble. Most of the iron and bronze was from sorts of weapons, from the
battlefield. For a scaffold, the workers used abandoned siege tower. A
scaffold is an object like a ladder, only it goes across the entire building.
Workers would pile dirt on the sides of the Colossus of Rhodes, but the
dirt was eventually was removed. After twelve long years the Colossus
of Rhodes was completed.
The Destruction of the Colossus of Rhodes
The Colossus of Rhodes is no longer here. Only fifty- six years Rhodes
was hit by an earthquake. Many buildings were damaged, but so was the
Colossus of Rhodes. It snapped at the knees, and fell down on the land.
The Colossus of Rhodes was in ruins. The leader offered to rebuild the
Colossus of Rhodes, but the people were afraid they had angered the god
Helios. The Colossus of Rhodes is destroyed.
