Hi I am Nicole and I want to talk about the Channel Tunnel. The nickname for the Channel Tunnel is The Chunnel. It is a wonder of the Modern world.

The Chunnel connects Great Britain and France. The Chunnel starts in Folkestone, Kent, United Kingdom and ends in Couquelles, Pas-de-Calais, France. The channel has three tracks. Two used to transport people, vehicles and freight. The third track is a service track used for maintenance and ventilation.

It took 13,000 engineers, Technicians and Workers to complete the 31 mile long tunnel. It took six years to build the Chunnel.

The first known idea for building a tunnel to connect Europe to Great Britain was 1751. There were many plans and ideas over the next two centuries until finally in 1986 France and Great Britain signed the Canterbury Treaty.

Construction of the Channel Tunnel started in 1988 and was completed in 1994. The High Speed trains used in the Chunnel take about 20 minutes to under the English Channel.
