The responsibility of building the temple and the statue was put to a worker named Phidias. Zeus was the king of the Greek gods. That is why the statue is about Zeus. How the Statue of Zeus was Built

The Statue of Zeus was made of many interesting things. The sculpture Phidias built a workshop. He also hired workers, to help him. They built the workshop together. Phidias was finally prepared to build the Statue of Zeus. Work began between 470 and 460B.C. Phidias invented a new way of making statues. He built the temple, first. Then, Phidias made wooden frame work inside the temple. It formed the shape of the statue. Workers carved different shapes. Zeus's clothes where made of sheets or slats of gold. His skin was made of ivory. Ivory is a material made from animals such as an elephant or walrus. Phidias made a way for the ivory to look like fine marble. The workers started building the Statue of Zeus from scratch, so I think it is amazing how the statue was so beautiful.

How the Statue was Made

The workers had all those materials, so what did they do with them? The gold and ivory they attached to the framework. Phidias made it so that the joints didn't show. The workers also polished the surface. Zeus looked like he had been made of marble. The wooden base was about 20 feet wide and 3 feet high. Zeus rose 40 feet above the base. That is about as tall as a 4 story building! Phidias carved animals and flowers on Zeus's robe and sandals. He put jewels and stones on. It was all done.

How the Statue of Zeus was Destroyed

The Statue of Zeus is no longer here. The statue was moved to a town named Constantinople, present day Istanbul, Turkey. It was put in a huge palace. It was just in time though, because natural disasters destroyed the city of Olympia. Layers of mud and dirt covered the temple. In 462 the palace in which Zeus was in caught fire and burned taking the Statue of Zeus with it. The statue's ruins are still there today.
